How to Draw an Easy Mushroom

The cap is wider than the stem. Draw the oval first so you can see that relationship before the spots make it busy.

Materials Pencil, paper, eraser. A black pen is optional for the spots.

Step 1

Draw a wide oval for the cap. It can be flatter than a circle. Leave empty paper under it for the stem.

Step 2

Add the stem under the middle of the oval. It is narrower than the cap and slightly wider at the bottom. The top of the stem tucks behind the cap.

Step 3

Mark a curve under the cap for the gills, and three light circles on the cap for spots. These are placement marks. They can move.

Step 4

Redraw the cap as a dome: keep the top of the oval and the lower curve, and erase the guide circles once the spot outlines are dark. Turn the gill curve into a few short lines.

Finished

The finished mushroom is a wide cap over a thinner stem. Three spots are plenty.

A common miss

A stem as wide as the cap stops reading as a mushroom and starts reading as a thumb. Narrow the stem until the cap clearly overhangs it.

One variation

Draw a second, smaller cap beside the first, sharing nothing but the ground. Same oval, shorter stem. Two mushrooms, one method.
